RHEUMATOLOGY

Rheumatologists are Internal Medicine subspecialty experts skilled in the non-surgical treatment of rheumatic illnesses, especially arthritis. Rheumatologists have special interests in unexplained rash, fever, arthritis, anemia, weakness, weight loss, fatigue, joint or muscle pain, autoimmune disease, and anorexia. They often serve as consultants, acting like detectives for other doctors.

 

 

 


Rheumatologists have particular skills in the evaluation of the over 100 forms of arthritis, and have special interest in rheumatoid arthritis, spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, Still disease, dermatomyositis, Sjogren's syndrome, vasculitis, scleroderma,mixed connective tissue disease, sarcoidosis, Lyme disease, osteomyelitis, osteoarthritis, back pain, gout,
pseudogout, relapsing polychondritis, Henoch-Schonlein purpura, serum sickness, reactive arthritis, Kawasaki disease, fibromyalgia, erythromelalgia, Raynaud's disease, growing pains, iritis, osteoporosis, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, and others.

The Rheumatology department also offers the skills of a Family Nurse Practitioner with a subspecialty in arthritis & rheumatology. The Nurse Practitioner works as part of the Rheumatology team, collaborating closely with the Rheumatologists to provide the highest quality of rheumatology care.

Infusion Center


The Rheumatology department also provides a state of the art infusion center room offering the latest in drug therapy for osteoporosis, arthritis, and autoimmune diseases including Rheumatoid Arthritis and Crohn's disease. Cutting edge medical advancements are available in the infusion center. The center is currently serving physicians and their patients in our community. Updated information on the patients progress is communicated to the patient's physician following treatments. The infusion center offers a professional and personal touch while patients are carefully monitored. Patient education is emphasized and addresses patient questions or concerns about their health status.

Appointments are available 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Please call (949) 364-7246 to schedule an appointment. The physicians accept Medicare assignment and accept most PPO insurance plans.

Staff Biographies

Catherine Driver M.D.

Dr. Catherine DriverDr. Driver received a B.A. in Chemistry from Dartmouth College. She graduated cum laude from medical school at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA. She then completed her Internal Medicine residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and subsequently a fellowship in rheumatology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. During her fellowship, in addition to clinical training, she was involved in clinical research on systemic lupus erythematosus, and authored several papers on lupus and the use of biologic medications. Dr. Driver is a member of the American College of Rheumatology and the American College of Physicians. She is board certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Driver treats patients with arthritis and other rheumatic diseases, with specific interest in rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus.

Dr. Driver joined Mission Internal Medical Group in August, 2007

William Shiel M.D., FACP, FACR

Dr. William ShielDr. Shiel received a Bachelor of Science degree with honors from the University of Notre Dame. There he was involved in research in radiation biology and received the Huisking Scholarship. After graduating from St. Louis University School of Medicine, he completed his Internal Medicine residency and Rheumatology fellowship at the University of California, Irvine. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. He is a Fellow of the American Colleges of Physicians and Rheumatology.

Dr. Shiel is in active practice in the field of rheumatology in south Orange County, California. He is currently an active Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at University of California, Irvine. He has served as chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center. He was selected as one of the most respected doctors in Orange County California in a poll of more than 5,000 physicians in the county performed by the Washington D.C. based Center for the Study of Services as published in Orange Coast magazine in January 2000.

Dr. Shiel has authored and served as a reviewer for numerous articles on subjects related to arthritis for prestigious peer-reviewed medical journals. He has co-edited a medical textbook. He is Co-Editor-In-Chief of the Webster's New World™ Medical Dictionary, Year 2000 First Edition and Year 2003 Second Edition. He has lectured in person and appeared on television and radio programs both for physicians and the community. He was a medical commentator for the national news broadcast of medical issues related to the death of Pope John Paul II, Fox News NYC, April, 2005. He has authored numerous expert medical-legal reviews. He is a contributor for questions for the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is a regular reviewer of board questions on behalf of the American Board of Rheumatology Subspecialty. He served on the Medical and Scientific Committee of the Arthritis Foundation, and is currently on the Medical Advisory Board of Lupus International. Dr. Shiel is proud to have served as Chief Editor for MedicineNet.com since he co-founded it in 1996.

Paul A. Wehrle M.D., FACP, FACR

Dr. Paul WehrleDr. Wehrle received a B.A. degree from UCLA, a M.A. degree from UC Berkely, and his M.D. degree from USC. He trained in the Unite States Army at Brooke and Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and is certified in both Internal Medicine and Rheumatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

He has activiely practiced rheumatology since 1980 and has concurrently hel a wide variety of clinical, administrative and leadership positions. He has published a number of articles in the medical literature and has held academic positions at the Uniformed Services Health Science University, Texas Tech University Medical School and at the University of California, San Francisco.

Working for many years at several large referral medical centers and university hospitals has afforded him a wealth of experience in diagnosing and treating a wider variety of rheumatic illnesses, ranging from the common to the extremely unusual.

Maureen Welker, MSN, NPc, CCRN*

Maureen WelkerMaureen Welker received a Bachelor of Science degree from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) and also obtained a Public Health Nurse Certification. There she served as Vice President of the Graduate Nurses Association, at CSULB, and also served as President of the Graduate Nurses Association. After graduating with a Masters of Science Degree in Nursing with honors from the California State University, Long Beach with a certificate in Family Practice, she acquired Board Certification.

Maureen Welker has over 18 years of experience in critical care and trauma department nursing. She has worked in family practice medicine, gastroenterology, bariatric medicine, pediatrics, dermatology and rheumatology. Maureen has also authored the Publication - Review of the Literature: On Effects Of Prayer On Patient Outcomes. She is currently the study coordinator, for the RADIUS study and collaborated with Dr Shiel on the following publications:

• Real-world Utilization of DMARDs and biologics in rheumatoid arthritis: the Radius Study, 2006
• Real-world effectiveness of select biologic and DMARD monotherapy and combination therapy in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis: results from the RADIUS Observational registry, 2006".

Maureen Welker's current professional affiliations include:
