Staff Biographies
Catherine Driver M.D.
Dr. Driver received a B.A. in Chemistry from Dartmouth College. She graduated cum laude from medical school at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA. She then completed her Internal Medicine residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and subsequently a fellowship in rheumatology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. During her fellowship, in addition to clinical training, she was involved in clinical research on systemic lupus erythematosus, and authored several papers on lupus and the use of biologic medications. Dr. Driver is a member of the American College of Rheumatology and the American College of Physicians. She is board certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Driver treats patients with arthritis and other rheumatic diseases, with specific interest in rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus.

William Shiel M.D.,
FACP, FACR
Dr. Shiel received a Bachelor of Science
degree with honors from the University
of Notre Dame. There he was involved in
research in radiation biology and received
the Huisking Scholarship. After graduating
from St. Louis University School of Medicine,
he completed his Internal Medicine residency
and Rheumatology fellowship at the University
of California, Irvine. He is board-certified
in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology.
He is a Fellow of the American Colleges
of Physicians and Rheumatology.
Dr. Shiel is in active practice in the
field of rheumatology in south Orange
County, California. He is currently an
active Associate Clinical Professor of
Medicine at University of California,
Irvine. He has served as chairman of the
Department of Internal Medicine at Mission
Hospital Regional Medical Center. He was
selected as one of the most respected
doctors in Orange County California in
a poll of more than 5,000 physicians in
the county performed by the Washington
D.C. based Center for the Study of Services
as published in Orange Coast magazine
in January 2000.
Dr. Shiel has authored and served as
a reviewer for numerous articles on subjects
related to arthritis for prestigious peer-reviewed
medical journals. He has co-edited a medical
textbook. He is Co-Editor-In-Chief of
the Webster's New World™ Medical Dictionary,
Year 2000 First Edition and Year 2003
Second Edition. He has lectured in person
and appeared on television and radio programs
both for physicians and the community.
He was a medical commentator for the national
news broadcast of medical issues related
to the death of Pope John Paul II, Fox
News NYC, April, 2005. He has authored
numerous expert medical-legal reviews.
He is a contributor for questions for
the American Board of Internal Medicine.
He is a regular reviewer of board questions
on behalf of the American Board of Rheumatology
Subspecialty. He served on the Medical
and Scientific Committee of the Arthritis
Foundation, and is currently on the Medical
Advisory Board of Lupus International.

Paul A. Wehrle
M.D., FACP, FACR
Dr. Wehrle received a B.A. degree from
UCLA, a M.A. degree from UC Berkely, and
his M.D. degree from USC. He trained in
the Unite States Army at Brooke and Walter
Reed Army Medical Center, and is certified
in both Internal Medicine and Rheumatology
by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
He has activiely practiced rheumatology
since 1980 and has concurrently hel a
wide variety of clinical, administrative
and leadership positions. He has published
a number of articles in the medical literature
and has held academic positions at the
Uniformed Services Health Science University,
Texas Tech University Medical School and
at the University of California, San Francisco.
Working for many years at several large
referral medical centers and university
hospitals has afforded him a wealth of
experience in diagnosing and treating
a wider variety of rheumatic illnesses,
ranging from the common to the extremely
unusual.
Maureen Welker,
MSN, NPc, CCRN*
Maureen Welker received a Bachelor of
Science degree from California State University,
Long Beach (CSULB) and also obtained a
Public Health Nurse Certification. There
she served as Vice President of the Graduate
Nurses Association, at CSULB, and also
served as President of the Graduate Nurses
Association. After graduating with a Masters
of Science Degree in Nursing with honors
from the California State University,
Long Beach with a certificate in Family
Practice, she acquired Board Certification.
Maureen Welker has over 18 years of experience
in critical care and trauma department
nursing. She has worked in family practice
medicine, gastroenterology, bariatric
medicine, pediatrics, dermatology and
rheumatology. Maureen has also authored
the Publication - Review of the Literature:
On Effects Of Prayer On Patient Outcomes.
She is currently the study coordinator,
for the RADIUS study and collaborated
with Dr Shiel on the following publications:

effectiveness of select biologic and
DMARD monotherapy and combination therapy
