Staff Biographies
Rudy Marquez, MD,
F.C.C.P.
Dr. Marquez was born and raised in Fresno, California. He went to college at the University of California, at Berkley from 1987 to 1992. He graduated with a degree in Psychology.
He attended medical school at Tufts University in Boston Massachusetts. He graduated in May 1997.
Following medical school, he completed his internship and residency program in Internal Medicine at the Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Medical Center from 1997 to 2000.
Afterwards, he was accepted into the Pulmonary/Critical Care program at LAC-USC, where he performed his training from 2000 to 2003. During this time, he conducted research in the Living Lobar Lung transplantation program. In this program, patients received one lobe of a lung on each side from two living donors, usually relatives. Dr. Marquez showed that the patients had good exercise tolerance compatible with patients that had received cadaveric lung transplants.
Following LAC-USC, Dr. Marquez moved to Ladera Ranch and started with Mission Internal Medical Group in 2003. In 2004 he was elected to be a fellow in the American College of Chest Physicians.
He is currently on staff at Mission Hospital, South Coast Hospital, and San Clemente Hospital. He is involved in a variety of leadership activities. He is a current board member of Mission Internal Medical Group and is currently the chair of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee at Mission Hospital since 2006.
Dr. Marquez is board certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary by the American Board of Internal Medicine. His interests include Asthma, COPD, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis and sleep medicine. Outside his practice, his hobbies include skiing and jogging.
George Schiffman M.D., F.C.C.P.
Dr.
Schiffman graduated from Hobart College
in 1976 with High Honors. He obtained
his Medical Doctorate degree from Rush
Medical College. He was elected to the
National Medical Honor Society - Alpha
Omega Alpha. His Internal Medicine Residency
at UCI was complete in 1985. His Pulmonary/Critical
Care Fellowship at UCI/VA Long Beach was
completed in 1987. He is Board Certified
in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary, and Critical
Care. He was instrumental in the formation
of the local Orange County Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Education Program (PREP) at Mission Hospital
Regional Medical Center and has been its
Medical Director since its inception in
1988. He is Chairman of the Intensive
Care Unit Committee, Mission Hospital
Regional Medical Center. He is Medical
Director of the Subacute Unit and the
Respiratory Department at South Coast
Medical Center. Dr. Schiffman has been
affiliated with Mission Internal Medical
Group since 1987. His interests include
asthma, COPD, pulmonary rehabilitation,
lung cancer, and sleep medicine.

Bruce Tammelin M.D., F.C.C.P.
Dr.
Tammelin received his medical degree from
the University of Tennessee in 1975. He
completed a rotating internship and Internal
Medicine residency training at Los Angeles
County-USC Medical Center.
Following his residency he served in
the US Air Force as a clinical instructor
in Internal Medicine where he helped train
physician assistants, interns and residents
and worked with the pulmonary fellows.
He served as the Director of Medical Education.
He completed his pulmonary critical care
fellowship at the University of California,
Irvine. While at UCI he was involved in
research in Sleep Medicine and served
as the pulmonary consultant to the sleep
center, one of the first such programs
in the US.
On joining Mission Internal Medical Group
in 1982 he developed the pulmonary and
critical care division which is now composed
of 4 pulmonary/critical care physicians
who are committed to providing pulmonary
and critical care services to mission
hospital.
Dr. Tammelin has been the Continuing
Medical Education Director for the past
20 years at Mission Hospital, coordinating
physician education, yearly conferences
and meetings. He also serves Childrens
Hospital in a similar role. For 15 years
he served as the Director of Respiratory
Care Services at Mission Hospital, coordinating
care with the trauma and neurocritical
care service. He has published and made
presentations in trauma medicine. While
at Mission Internal Medical Group he has
been involved in a variety of leadership
activities, including board member, corporation
president and physician recruiter.
In 1997, he founded and directed the
Mission Hospitalist Consulting Group,
one of the first hospitalist services
in Orange County. The program has continued
to grow and enjoys an excellent reputation
as the premier hospitalist group at Mission
Hospital.
Since starting practice in 1982 he has
been involved in the practice of Sleep
Medicine which has remained his primary
interest. He has been the Director of
Mission Sleep Disorders Institute since
1994 and has overseen its development
and growth. The sleep center is the only
accredited center in south Orange County
and is dedicated to the evaluation and
management of all sleep disorders.
Edmond Vartany M.D.
Dr.
Vartany graduated from Tehran University
medical school in 1993 among the highest
percentile of his graduating class. He
worked as a general practitioner from
1993 to 1999, and during that time was
part of the bilingual medical thesaurus
project developed by the World Health
Organization. He came to the US in 1999
and entered Yale Primary Care Internal
Medicine Residency where he was chosen
as best Intern. In 2003 he started his
fellowship in Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine
and also completed another year of Critical
Care fellowship at Yale New Haven Hospital.
Dr. Vartany has translated medical textbooks,
presented abstracts in major international
conferences and has manuscripts that are
currently under peer review.
Areas of special interests are Sleep
Disorders and their cardiovascular effects
and also quality improvement in the Intensive
Care Unit. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Sleep Medicine and Critical Care.
